Useful Tips and Ways To Access Support

Warm Home Discount –  if you are eligible for this, £150 will be paid to your energy account or pre-payment meter automatically.  You don’t need to apply it will be done automatically, if you haven’t got a letter by the start of January and you think you’re eligible for the scheme, call the helpline 0800 030 9322 its free to call from landlines and mobiles. You must call the helpline or send any requested information by 27 February 2026 – this is when the scheme closes.

Check if your supplier is part of the Warm Home Discount scheme here.

Winter Fuel Payment – if you are of pension age you may be entitled to £100-£300 to help with bills.

You must make a claim by 31 March 2026.  For more information around the winter fuel payment, click here.

To make a claim, click here. If you’re asked to claim in any other way than the official gov.uk website, it’s probably a scam.

Fuel voucher – if you cannot afford to top up your pre payment meter you may be eligible for a fuel voucher, for more information speak to your energy supplier or your local council.

Cold Weather payment  – you may get this is you are eligible – further information is available here.

Energy Scams – Some scammers are pretending to be from energy companies or government departments like the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

You may receive a text asking you to apply for a ‘heating allowance’ or Winter Fuel Payment.

Scammers do this to get your personal information.  If you think it may be a scam:

  • don’t give out any personal information or bank details
  • don’t use any contact details they’ve sent you or click any links

Gas Safety – Gas safety is just as important as saving energy. Make sure gas appliances like boilers and cookers are serviced every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and fit a carbon monoxide alarm to warn you of dangerous fumes you can’t see or smell. Warning signs of a problem include:

  • Yellow or orange flames
  • Soot or staining around appliances
  • Pilot lights going out
  • Unusual smells, or symptoms like headaches or dizziness

Always keep vents and flues clear, and never use gas appliances for heating unless they’re designed for it. If you smell gas or think there’s a problem, turn off the gas at the meter, open doors and windows, avoid using electrical switches or naked flames, leave the property if needed and call the Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999 immediately.
